Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has expressed serious concern over the proposal to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850. He has warned that if the expansion of seats is done only on the basis of population, it may weaken the political strength of the southern states.
Revanth Reddy wrote a letter to PM Modi
Revanth Reddy has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this issue, demanding a comprehensive discussion at the national level and calling an all-party meeting. He says that such a big decision should not be taken without consensus. Not only the Centre, but he has also written letters to the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry, appealing to the southern states to unite. His message is clear. If this proposal is implemented, then South India will have to raise its voice collectively.
Chief Minister spoke on the proposal of seat expansion
Dividing this entire issue into three different parts, the Chief Minister made it clear that reservation for women, delimitation and increasing the number of seats. These three are different subjects. He supported immediate implementation of 33% women reservation within the existing 543 seats. Also advocated for delimitation without increasing seats.
Revanth Reddy suggested hybrid model
Revanth Reddy also said that the southern states have performed better in development and population control, but if the distribution of seats will be based only on population, then the benefit will go to those states where the population is more. This will create a kind of unfair balance. As a solution he has suggested a hybrid model. Under this model, half the seats should be decided on the basis of population and the remaining half on the basis of economic performance and development parameters. He believes that this will maintain balance in the federal structure and there will be justice for all the states.
This issue is now gradually becoming a major center of political debate. Where in the coming time, a situation of conflict may arise between the Center and the states.
