Women Reservation Bill: Political agitation has intensified regarding the Constitution Amendment Bill 2026. All parties participated enthusiastically in the meeting of opposition leaders called on Wednesday regarding the implementation of women’s reservation. After this meeting, Samajwadi Party MP Ramshankar Rajbhar said that he is opposing the delimitation. He said that he wants women’s reservation, but this bill is not right. Annie Raja from CPI, who attended the opposition meeting, said that they are opposing the delimitation. He further said that the form of reservation in the bill is not right.
A day before the special session, an important meeting was called by the opposition parties in the national capital Delhi to decide the strategy. This meeting was held at the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in which many big leaders including opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav attended. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and CPML General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya joined the meeting virtually, while the Aam Aadmi Party indicated supporting the opposition’s common stand on the women’s reservation amendment.
Akali Dal’s opposition
Shiromani Akali Dal has opposed linking delimitation with women’s reservation. Party president Sukhbir Singh Badal said that his party supports women’s reservation, but opposes the delimitation of Lok Sabha seats on the basis of population. They argue that this will harm states like Punjab that are successful in population control and benefit other states.
Whereas Omar Abdullah appealed to all the parties of INDIA Alliance to adopt a collective stand on this bill. He said that in Parliament – be it Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha – the opposition will have to unite and decide its strategy. Regarding delimitation, he cited the Jammu and Kashmir experience of 2023 and raised the question whether this process is in the interest of the common voters or to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Presence of other leaders
Shiv Sena supremo Uddhav Thackeray, Sanjay Raut, TR Baalu, Annie Raja, Mohammad Basheer and Supriya Sule also participated in this important meeting. The main objective of this meeting is to decide the joint strategy of the opposition on issues like delimitation and women’s reservation, so that the government can be unitedly faced in the special session of Parliament. This meeting is also being considered as a test of opposition unity, from where the future political direction will be decided.
