Will 33 percent women’s reservation in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies be implemented from 2029, Cabinet approves the bills

The Cabinet has approved the bills to implement 33 percent women’s reservation in Parliament and Assemblies from the year 2029. A total of three bills will be brought. Earlier on Sunday (April 5, 2026), PM Narendra Modi had said that the budget session of Parliament has been extended by three days to implement the law passed in 2023 giving 33 percent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies from 2029. Prime Minister Modi said that the budget session will be held again on 16, 17 and 18 April.

Women’s rights will be discussed in both the houses of the country

The Women’s Reservation Bill will be discussed in the houses of both the countries. The government is going to call a special session for this. In this session, which will run till 16, 17 and 18 April, a healthy debate will be seen in the House regarding the rights of women and the contribution of half the population in the country. Its objective is to ensure participation of women in the country’s constituencies and parliament. This will strengthen women empowerment. The purpose of discussion on this bill is to remove the difficulties in implementing it. Also the amendment bill has to be passed.

What did Kiran Rijiju tell in Rajya Sabha?

Apart from this, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rijiju had told in Rajya Sabha that Parliament will be adjourned. The House will sit again after two to three weeks for an important law related to women’s reservation. On Jairam Ramesh’s question on the legislative functioning of the House, Rijiju had also said that the government has consulted more than 80 percent of the parties in this matter.

Congress had written a letter to the government regarding the special session.

Regarding this special session, Congress had written a letter to the government demanding to convene the Parliament after the assembly elections. On this, Rijiju had said that the government is not working arbitrarily. MPs of all parties are being consulted. Rijiju said that women’s reservation is an issue which should be passed unanimously. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had also demanded calling an all-party meeting.
