America-Israel launched Operation Epic Fury against Iran on Saturday (28 February 2026), which is still going on. In this, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and top generals of IRGC were killed. This incident was reminiscent of the 2003 Iraq invasion, when Saddam Hussein’s military infrastructure collapsed like a house of cards.
Even after 14 days of the joint attack by America and Israel, Iran has not only survived in this fight, but has also shaken the entire Middle East. The military strategy of Major General Mohammad Ali Jafri is believed to be effective behind this surprising resistance of Iran. Jafari had closely studied the American attack on Iraq in 2003. They found that the biggest weakness of the Iraqi army was the highly centralized command structure and without orders from Saddam Hussein the Iraqi commanders could not move a single step, hence they lost to the US.
What is Mosaic Defense System?
Taking a lesson from Iraq, General Jafari divided the IRGC into 31 semi-autonomous commands based on the 31 states of Iran, which has been named Mosaic Defense System. This means dividing the army into small independent units. Jafari has created independent headquarters, communication systems, missile, drone stores and intelligence assets for each province. They have been given clear instructions that even if contact with Tehran is lost or the central leadership is lost, they can continue the war independently as per the pre-decided plan.
How is Iran getting benefit?
Jafari has made this strategy using Iran’s geographical location, high mountains and vast interior. Due to this, the enemy army can be trapped in a long and tiring war. The events till today (13 March 2026) have proved that Jafri’s autopilot model is working. Although America has killed the Iranian Defense Minister and the top commanders of IRGC, despite all this there was no reduction in Iran’s retaliatory action.
Iran’s provincial commanders, acting independently, have targeted infrastructure such as oil refineries and marine terminals in Israel and the Middle East. On one hand, Iranian President Masood Pejeshkian is apologizing to neutral countries, while on the other hand, the IRGC unit is sticking to its pre-determined destructive plan.
Despite being superior in terms of technology and firepower, America and Israel are not able to break Iran’s mosaic defense system. The seed sown by General Jafari in 2005 is protecting the existence of Iran today in 2026.
