When will the census be held, in how many stages will the process be completed, the government told the date in the Parliament.


The 2027 census in India will be conducted in two phases, which will collect detailed information about population and households across the country. This information was given by Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai in response to the question of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha.

The first phase, called House Listing and Housing Census, will be conducted in any 30-day period between April and September of 2026. In this phase, the count of every house, its status and related information will be collected. The second phase will be ‘Population Enumeration’, that is, individual counting of people will be done.

The second phase will take place in February 2027.

The second phase of population counting will take place in February 2027, the main date of which has been kept at midnight of March 1, 2027. However, in snow covered or difficult geographical areas like Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, it will be done earlier, i.e. in September 2026. The official date for these areas has been set at midnight on October 1, 2026.

How is the census questionnaire prepared?

To prepare the census questionnaire, opinions are taken from various ministries, departments, organizations and experts. This ensures that the questions are relevant and correct. In every new phase, the process is further improved by learning from past experiences.

Information related to caste will also be included

The tradition of census in India is more than 150 years old. Information related to caste will also be collected in this census. This decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs on 30 April 2025. The 2027 census will be conducted digitally, in which data will be collected through mobile apps and citizens will also have the option to fill the information online themselves. In this way, the 2027 census will be a mixture of modern technology and historical experience, due to which more accurate and reliable data can be obtained from across the country.
