Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, General Secretary in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir Naseer Hussain, party’s national general secretary and Jammu and Kashmir Congress Legislature Party leader Ghulam Ahmed Mir demanded to restore state status to Jammu and Kashmir.
Ghulam Ahmed Mir said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a meeting with political representatives of Jammu and Kashmir in June 2021, in which he promised to restore elections and then restoration of state status after delimitation. The central government had also given an affidavit in the Supreme Court that the status of the state will be restored after the election.
Did not promise even after 10 months of election
He said that after the intervention of the Supreme Court, elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir in October 2024. The new government and the assembly formed after the election also passed a proposal to restore state status, but even after 10 months of the election, the Modi government has not fulfilled the promise of restoring the state status.
Ghulam Ahmed Mir, criticizing the decision of 5 August 2019, mentioned the importance of Jammu and Kashmir of Maharaja Hari Singh and said that the Modi government broke it and divided it into three parts, which weakened its power and identity. He said that the Congress has been considering it as unfair and unconstitutional since then. The Congress launched a movement 5 months ago to restore state status, return land, jobs and resources.
India had expressed commitment after the journey of pair
He further said that Rahul Gandhi along with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had committed to restore the state status in Srinagar, ending the Bharat Jito Yatra in Srinagar and the two leaders also wrote a letter to the Prime Minister for this.
He also condemned the inhuman behavior of party workers during protests in Srinagar and Jammu and said that on July 22, Congress leaders came from Jammu and Kashmir and demonstrated at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The Congress will intensify its movement to restore the state status of Jammu and Kashmir.
Congress will not join the cabinet
At the same time, Digvijay Singh said that there is a coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir, but the Congress has decided that till the state status is restored, it will not join the cabinet. He also mentioned the Chief Minister being stopped by the police.
Digvijay Singh also mentioned the status of Ladakh and said that 97 percent tribal people live there, for which the sixth schedule of the Constitution should be implemented. He also demanded models like Delhi and Puducherry for Ladakh, which has an elected legislature.
Government has no strength
At the same time, Naseer Hussain said that elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir, but the government has no strength. Every kind of power is with the Lieutenant Governor. The Congress wants Jammu and Kashmir to get full state status, the people of Jammu and Kashmir should get their rights. After getting the status of full state, all the scams in Jammu and Kashmir should be investigated.
