There was a huge uproar in North Chandranagar village of Harwood Point Coastal Police Station area of West Bengal on the morning of Tuesday (October 21, 2025) over the alleged insult to the idol of Mother Kali. An accused was also arrested in this case.
West Bengal Police said on the social media platform ‘X’ that at around 5.30 in the morning, information about idol desecration was received in a temple of Suryanagar Gram Panchayat. Police immediately reached the spot and spoke to the puja committee members, who said they would file a formal complaint after the immersion. However, after this a group of outsiders entered the area, which increased the crowd and the idol was taken to the national highway, causing a road jam.
Stone pelting took place despite police request
Police said that the mob blocked the road, due to which public vehicles and ambulances got stuck. Officials tried to pacify the protesters, but despite requests to vacate the road, stone pelting began.
Giving top priority, the police took immediate action to secure the idol of Maa Kali. The idol was kept in the police vehicle with full devotion, so that there was no damage in the chaos. After this the area was evacuated and peace was restored. Police started continuous patrolling and checking CCTV footage.
The accused had insulted the idol while intoxicated.
Based on intelligence, Narayan Halder (28), son of Bhupati Halder, was arrested. During interrogation, he admitted to insulting the idol while intoxicated. Police registered two cases of road blocking and vandalism.
No arrest has been made yet in the road jam case, but investigation is ongoing. Police have intensified efforts to identify other people involved. In the initial investigation, it appears to be a local disturbance, in which some mischievous elements tried to spread misinformation. The police have appealed to the citizens not to pay attention to rumors and maintain peace.
