West Bengal News: Frequent road accidents have once again become a matter of concern for the administration and the common people. Fatal accidents are occurring due to speeding, drunk driving and ignoring rules. Two separate incidents in East Medinipur and Kolkata of West Bengal have raised big questions on road safety.
Civic volunteer on duty dies
A tragic accident took place at Haldiya turn in Kolaghat police station area of East Medinipur district at around 2 pm. Civic volunteer Sudeep Chakraborty, who was doing duty on the road, was hit hard by an uncontrolled car. The collision was so strong that Sudeep got seriously injured. He was immediately taken to Tamluk District Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police investigation revealed that the person driving the car, Subrata Maiti, is a local resident and was driving under the influence of alcohol. As soon as he saw the police, the accused got scared and started trying to run away. During this time, he drove the car at high speed and hit the civic volunteer. The police arrested the accused from the spot.
Fake notes recovered from the bag
Superintendent of Police, in-charge of East Medinipur, Mithun De said that several fake notes of Rs 500 have been recovered from the bag of the accused. Police say that after seeing the Civic Police, the accused threw a bag full of fake notes, but it was later confiscated. Now, along with road accident, a case of possessing fake currency has also been registered against the accused.
Horrific accident near Victoria Memorial
On the other hand, a luxury car met with an accident near Victoria Memorial on Red Road, Kolkata. The car traveling at high speed first hit a lamp post and then a tree. The father and son traveling in the car were seriously injured in the accident. Apart from this, a sanitation worker working on the roadside has also been injured.
The car was completely damaged after the accident. The windows were broken, the airbags were deployed and the rear part of the car was badly damaged. The lamp post which was hit was also broken from the top. It is being told that the car was only 1 year and 4 months old and had Maharashtra number. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the speed of the car was much more than the prescribed limit of 50 km per hour. Police are investigating whether the driver had fallen asleep or there was some technical fault in the car.
