The political chessboard has started to be laid for the assembly elections in Assam. This time there is going to be a high-profile electoral contest in Jorhat, as former Assam Assembly Speaker and sitting MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami is ready to challenge Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi in the elections this time.
Reacting to the official announcement of his candidature, Goswami expressed surprise at Gogoi’s decision to contest the assembly elections from Jorhat. Speaking to the media, Goswami said, “I wonder why Gaurav Gogoi has come here to contest elections as an MLA. He has been an MP from Jorhat, why has he now decided to contest the assembly elections?”
What did Hitendra Nath Goswami say?
Emphasizing his role as a sitting MLA, Goswami said that even when Gogoi was an MP, there was a lack of direct coordination on development projects. He further said, “He was the MP of Jorhat and I am the MLA here, but I do not remember any discussion with him regarding the welfare projects of the constituency.”
Young generation will play important role- Goswami
Goswami clarified that there is no personal rivalry between the two leaders. He said, “We have no enmity with them, so I do not want to make unnecessary comments.” Goswami acknowledged the growing influence of young voters on their role in the upcoming elections. “The young generation will play an important role in this election, but they are aware and know whom to elect,” he said confidently.
Speaking on the recent controversies, Goswami avoided commenting on the allegations linking Gogoi to Pakistan and said, “I don’t want to comment on it. The people of Jorhat are educated and they know what is right.”
Meanwhile, while announcing a cultural initiative, Goswami revealed plans for a project in honor of Assamese music legend Zubeen Garg. He said, “We are starting a project dedicated to Zubeen Garg, which will be constructed in Sotai near Science College.” Given the significant political influence of both the leaders, Jorhat constituency is expected to see a tough and intense electoral contest in the coming days.
