Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday addressed the 47th ASEAN Summit through virtual medium. He said that India and ASEAN together represent about 25 percent of the world’s population. PM Modi said that relations between the two sides are based on deep historical, cultural and shared values.
Prime Minister Modi said in his address that ASEAN is an important pillar of India’s ‘Act East Policy’. He stressed that cooperation between India and ASEAN is extremely important for regional stability, peace and prosperity.

‘India and ASEAN, charioteers of the Global South’ PM Modi said that the partnership between India and ASEAN countries is not only economic or strategic, but it is also a symbol of the voice and leadership of the ‘Global South’. He said that India has stood firmly with its ASEAN friendly countries during every crisis and disaster.
India is committed to moving forward together – PM Modi
PM Modi said, ‘Even in this period of uncertainties, there has been continuous progress in the India-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This strong partnership of ours is emerging as a strong basis for global stability and development. The theme of this year’s ASEAN Summit is Inclusivity and Sustainability. This theme is clearly visible in our shared efforts. Be it digital inclusion or ensuring food security and resilient supply chains amid the current global challenges. India fully supports these priorities and is committed to moving forward together in this direction.
Malaysia’s PM asked for cooperation
Earlier, while inaugurating the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday said that there is a need for adaptability and cooperation to face the protectionism and uncertainty prevailing in the world. The Malaysian Prime Minister said that increasing protectionism and changing supply chains remind us that resilience depends on adaptability. We are seeing increasing competition and increasing uncertainty in various sectors. These adverse circumstances test not only our economy but also our collective resolve to maintain faith in cooperation. He expressed confidence that understanding and communication can be maintained even in adverse circumstances.
