There will be no reduction in Lok Sabha seats in South India: PM Modi

As per the previously scheduled schedule, the current budget session of Parliament was to conclude on Thursday (April 2, 2026), but now it has been extended. There will be a three-day meeting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha from April 16 and several bills including increasing the number of seats in Lok Sabha from 543 to 816 to implement women’s reservation will be considered. PM Modi said that this expansion will ensure that despite the success in population control, there will be no reduction in the number of seats in South Indian states.

He said, ‘False rumors are being spread that the number of seats in South Indian states will be reduced due to population control, but this is completely untrue. Parliament will take steps to ensure that his seat remains completely safe. States like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Telangana have done good work towards population control. Even if their population growth is low, none of their Lok Sabha seats should be reduced.

Congress had accused BJP

This statement of PM Modi comes at a time when Congress has targeted BJP by raising the issue of delimitation and argued that the south Indian states which effectively control the population should not be punished in the form of reduction in their parliamentary seats. Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh had recently said that this is a big issue and as per the current situation, the number of parliamentary seats in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh can be reduced.

Our government ensured women’s reservation: PM Modi

Parliament will meet again from April 16 to 18 to consider and take forward the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’. Our aim is to ensure 33 percent participation of women in Parliament by 2029.

He stressed on the government’s focus on women empowerment. He said, ‘Women are the biggest beneficiaries of NDA’s policies. Women empowerment and representation are our priority. We have worked to solve every problem related to women’s life. We built toilets in every house, opened Jan Dhan accounts and built houses in the names of women.
