Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has given a big statement on Friday (December 26, 2025) on the issue of conflict between science and religion. He said that there is no conflict between science and religion and in the end both discover the same truth through different paths.
While addressing the Indian Science Conference held in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, Bhagwat said that religion is often misunderstood as religion, whereas in reality it is the science of operation of the universe. He said, ‘Religion is not a religion. This is the rule according to which the universe operates. Whether one believes it or not, no one can work outside it. He also said that imbalance in religion causes destruction.
Believe in science, religion has no place in scientific research – Bhagwat
Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat said that historically science has maintained distance from religion believing that it has no place in scientific research, but this view is fundamentally wrong. According to him, the real difference between science and spirituality is only in methodology, but the goal of both is the same. He said, ‘There is no conflict between science and religion or spirituality. Their methods may be different, but the goal is the same and that is the search for truth.
Explaining the scientific process, Sarsanghchalak said that science depends on external observation, experimentation and repeatable experience to establish facts, while spirituality follows the same principle through internal experience. He said, ‘Spirituality also emphasizes on direct experience and says that whatever is experienced should be accessible to everyone.’
He said that science focuses on modifying matter through external observation, while spirituality works in the internal, subtle realm through disciplined experiments. He said that modern science has begun to discuss consciousness as universal rather than local and compared it to ancient Indian philosophical concepts such as Sarvam Khalvidam Brahma and Prajnanam Brahma.
India should aspire to become a world leader – Sangh chief
Emphasizing the importance of language in understanding religion, he said that Indian languages uniquely express its essence. He called for efforts to disseminate scientific knowledge to the common people through mother tongues. While mentioning global concerns like environmental challenges, Bhagwat said that India should provide scientific and religious perspective to the world.
He stressed that India should aspire to become a world leader rather than merely a superpower while becoming economically and strategically strong. Bhagwat said that by integrating material progress with the perspective of religion, India can provide a new vision and strength to humanity, so that the nation can move forward cooperatively as custodians of creation. He said that knowledge should be imparted in the language the individual understands, as people understand concepts more effectively in their mother tongue.
There are many words to express religion in Indian languages- Bhagwat
Citing the example of Finland, Bhagwat said students from different countries receive education in their respective mother tongues till class eight, which is supported by a dedicated teacher training university. Highlighting the role of language in proper study and understanding, he said, ‘Education in mother tongue promotes intellectual development and improves the ability to absorb knowledge efficiently.’ Bhagwat emphasized that Indian languages have words to express religion which are not there in other languages. He called for steps to ensure that scientific and spiritual knowledge reaches the people in their mother tongue.
