Maulana arshad madani: On the release of the Udaipur files film, the Supreme Court has upheld the ban till Monday (July 21), that is, the court has refused to give any relief to the filmmaker. Earlier, the Delhi High Court also stayed a stay on it. The petition filed by the filmmaker was heard in the Supreme Court on Wednesday (16 July 2025).
On behalf of the filmmaker, senior advocate Gaurav Bhatia argued that the decision of the Delhi High Court is unconstitutional, as the High Court, while hearing the petition of Maulana Arshad Madni, stopped the release of the film in just two days, while my client has a censor board certificate. Gaurav Bhatia also said that the producer is losing crores due to the release of the film.
Supreme Court did not agree with Gaurav Bhatia’s arguments
The court did not agree with the arguments of Gaurav Bhatia and said that Maulana Arshad Madani has filed a petition to reconsider the certificate in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. In such a situation, it would not be appropriate to remove the ban on the release of the film right now. The court said that the decision of the Delhi High Court is correct or not, there will be a decision on it later. At present, the ministry should be allowed to take a decision on the petition of Maulana Madani.
Gaurav Bhatia requested the court to direct the ministry to take a decision on the petition today and then the court should hear the case on Friday, but the Supreme Court rejected the request and said that the Ministry should be given appropriate time to take the decision after listening to the arguments of all the parties and now the next hearing in the matter will be held on Monday.
What did Maulana Arshad Madani say?
Reacting to this action of the Supreme Court, Maulana Arshad Madni, president of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, expressed satisfaction. He said that the comments of the judges included in the bench are very important, which reflects the sensitivity of the case. Even though the judges did not see the film themselves, the court realizes that the release of the Delhi High Court and the action of removing many objectionable scenes of the film, the release of the film may threaten the country’s peace and law and order. Maulana Madni said that the remarks of the court that ‘there will be no loss due to the delay in the release of the film, but if the atmosphere of the country is disturbed by the release, it would be a big loss’ justifies our legal battle.
‘Whichever judge will watch this film, will not allow release’
During the hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Maulana Arshad Madni, told the court that he himself had seen this film and after watching he was shaken from within as it contains hatred against a particular community. Kapil Sibal also urged that the court should watch this film. He said that whatever judge will watch this film, he will not allow its release.
During the hearing, the court also ordered the police commissioner to contact the filmmaker and the son of Kanhaiyalal. Apart from this, the Supreme Court also heard the petition of Mohammad Javed, accused in the Kanhaiyalal murder case, in which a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the release of the film. Senior advocate Maneka Guruswami told the court that the film has not only spread hatred against a community, but also has objectionable comments on the judiciary. Apart from this, cases like Gyanvapi and Kanhaiyalal murder case are also mentioned in the film which are currently under consideration in court. He said that the release of the film can affect the fair trial.
