Underlining this change, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said, ‘India is writing an impressive defense export success story.’ He said, ‘Another important thing in this is that both public and private sectors have equal participation in this growth. The contribution of DPSUs was 54.84% and that of private industry was 45.16%, which shows the strength of a collaborative and self-reliant defense ecosystem.
Increasing demand for high-tech defense systems: Rajnath Singh
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said, ‘Systems like BrahMos missile are establishing India’s technological capability at the global level. Many countries in South-East Asia and Africa are showing interest in Indian defense equipment. This change is also important because defense exports are not just trade but the basis of strategic partnership.
He said, ‘The most interesting thing is that India’s defense exports have increased more than 25 times in the last decade. While in 2013-14 it was only Rs 686 crore, today it has crossed Rs 38,000 crore. This change clearly shows that India is now moving rapidly towards becoming a global defense manufacturing hub.
He further said, ‘India is now exporting defense equipment to more than 100 countries. This includes countries like America, France, Armenia, Philippines, Italy and UAE. This reflects India’s growing technological credibility and strategic reach.

In this regard, renowned economist and chartered accountant Rajneesh Kumar said, ‘The change is clearly visible. The government is rapidly promoting self-reliance, exports and private sector in defence. On the other hand, many countries are looking for alternatives to traditional suppliers. India’s strength is simple – affordable, reliable and time-tested defense technology. Going forward, the focus will be on drones, missiles and advanced defense technology.
He said, ‘South-East Asia, Africa, Latin America and Gulf countries will become big buyers. This is not just a one-time boom, but a sign that India is becoming a serious defense exporter in the long run. Exports include high-tech products like BrahMos missiles, artillery guns, radar systems, electronic warfare systems and personal protective gear. This is an indication that India is now providing not only basic equipment but also advanced defense technology to the world.

Economist Rajneesh Kumar said, ‘Behind this success, policies like Self-reliant India and Make in India have a big role, which promoted domestic production and reduced dependence on imports. Although India is still among the world’s largest defense importers, rapidly growing exports are making it a strong global player. The contribution of DPSUs at 54.84% and private sector at 45.16% indicates that the country’s defense ecosystem is now balanced and developing rapidly.
He further said, ‘At present, the picture is clear that India is no longer just a defense importer. It is fast emerging as a big exporter. The government aims to further increase this figure in the coming years and include India among the top defense exporters of the world. If the current pace continues, the day is not far when India will prepare defense solutions not only for itself but also for the world.
