‘Sukhna Lake is moving towards destruction’: Chief Justice’s strict comment on the damage caused to Chandigarh’s lake due to politician-builder nexus.

The Supreme Court has reprimanded the builder mafia in and around Chandigarh. The court has raised questions as to why the famous Sukhna Lake is being allowed to be destroyed? While hearing a case, Chief Justice Surya Kant said, ‘How much more will you dry up Sukhna Lake? Builder mafia is working with political support. Sukhna Lake is moving towards destruction.

The matter is related to Sukhna Forest Sanctuary adjacent to Sukhna Lake. Many people in the residential areas adjacent to this protected area have been opposing it. One such petition was placed in the court. Three petitioners from Nayagaon area of Mohali have demanded that the area just 100 meters away from the sanctuary should be declared an eco-sensitive zone. Like other forest areas, it is wrong to declare an eco-sensitive zone of at least 1 kilometer.

The new petition says that the 1 kilometer eco-sensitive zone will affect at least 2 lakh people. These people live in the villages on the Punjab side of Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary. On behalf of these petitioners, the court was requested to make them a party in the pending case. The Chief Justice made this comment on this request. However, along with this he also said that when the case will be heard, everyone will be given a chance to express their views.

The matter is related to the conservation of the ‘catchment area’ of Sukhna Lake. To stop encroachment there, an order was given to demolish the structures in 2020. After this, in November 2024, the Supreme Court had issued a notice to the Punjab Government, Chandigarh Administration and the Central Government on the petition of Tarsem Lal of Nada village, Mohali. This petition was against the 1998 notification which related to Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary. The matter is still pending in the court. The Punjab government has told the Supreme Court that it is ready to establish eco-sensitive zones as per its orders.
