‘Such crimes will not be tolerated, the accused will get strict punishment’, CM Mamata Banerjee said on Durgapur gangrape case.


West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday (October 12, 2025) termed the incident of ‘gang rape’ of a medical student in Durgapur in West Bardhaman district as shocking. He said that no culprit will be spared.

Before leaving to take stock of relief and rehabilitation work in North Bengal affected by rains and landslides, Mamata, while talking to reporters at Kolkata airport, said that her government has zero tolerance for such incidents.

Gang rape of medical student

Giving his first reaction to the incident of ‘gang rape’ of a medical student in Durgapur, the Chief Minister said, ‘This is a shocking incident. Our stance is that such crimes will not be tolerated at all. Three accused have been arrested and the police is searching for others. No one will be spared.

Police had said on Saturday that some people in Durgapur allegedly gang-raped a medical student resident of Jaleshwar in Balasore district of Odisha. According to the police, the incident took place outside the premises of a private medical college on Friday night when the second year student had gone for dinner with a friend.

The institute is also fully responsible for the incident

Mamta said that the institute where the victim is a student is also responsible for this incident. He said, ‘Private colleges should ensure security in and around their campuses.’ The police said that the statement of the medical student has been recorded and the FSL team has collected evidence from the spot.
