The Supreme Court has sought a reply from the Center on the petition of former Rajya Sabha member Subramanian Swamy seeking to declare Ram Sethu as a national monument. Subramanian Swamy had requested the government to take a quick decision on his representation to declare Ram Sethu as a national monument.
Ram Sethu is a long range of limestone between Pamban Island located in the southeast of Tamil Nadu and Mannar Island in the northwest offshore area of Sri Lanka. A bench of Justice Vikramnath and Justice Sandeep Mehta agreed to hear the plea of Subramanian Swamy and issued a notice to the Center. The court will now hear the case after four weeks.
The petition of former Union Minister Subramanian Swamy said that in 2023, the court asked him to submit a memorandum to the central government, but the government has not decided on his memorandum. Subramanian Swamy demands that he needs to give permanent protection in view of the religious and cultural significance of Ram Sethu, therefore, he should get the status of a national memorial.
In the year 2023 Solicitor General Tushar Mehta Said that this matter is under consideration under the Ministry of Culture and Subramaniam Swami can present additional material in this regard. after this Subramaniam Swamy filed an representation before the Center and in May, he filed a new petition. He said in his petition that he has not received any response from the Center in this matter.
The petition states that in the history and Ramayana of India, it was told that Ram Sethu Lord Rama and his comrades built to go to Sri Lanka, so that he Lanka Naresh can save Mother Sita from Ravana. He said that according to history and Indian era system Ram Sethu It was built several centuries ago. He said that it is learned that the bridge was used till the 15th century, but its use was stopped due to storms.
Subramaniam Swami said that Anchient Monument And Archaeological Sites Of Section 3 and 4 more Remember Act Under 1958, the Government of India is bound to declare ancient monuments as national importance.
