Strangled, drank pesticides and then crema

A heartbreaking incident has come to light in Melkunda village of Kalburgi. Police Commissioner Sharanappa S. On Friday (29 August 2025), D. informed that a father strangled his 18 -year -old daughter and then forcibly tried to make it a form of suicide. Later he also cremated the daughter. According to the police, the incident took place on Thursday. In the preliminary information, it was said to be suicide, but after suspicion the local police reached the village and the investigation case came to light.

Kalburgi police have arrested the accused father Shankar. Sharanappa said that Shankar was opposing his daughter’s relationship with another community. Shankar has 5 daughters and feared that if the daughter married an inter -caste marriage, the marriage of her other three daughters could be interrupted.

Strangled to death

According to the Commissioner of Police, the accused tried to convince the daughter through relatives to focus on studies, but she remained adamant on her decision. After this, Shankar strangled him to death and gave it a form of suicide by drinking pesticides. The people of the village got confident of this and they also attended the funeral. Evidence has been gathered by calling the forensic team on the spot. The police have registered a case of murder and evidence. Sharanappa said that in the initial investigation, there is a possibility of involvement of two more relatives of Shankar. If found guilty, he will also be arrested.

Cases related to honor killing

In the case related to honor killing, there is a provision of hanging or life imprisonment for this crime. Apart from this, eradicating evidence comes under IPC Section 201. The Supreme Court has also said earlier that honor killing is “the most heinous crime” and there should not be any kind of softness in it.
