Nimisha priya case: India’s Foreign Ministry (Mea) has confirmed that Indian nurse Nimisha Priya’s sentence has been postponed by the death sentence in Yemen. This decision has been taken in view of India’s recent diplomatic efforts and the possibilities of agreement between the two sides.
Government of India is constantly helping
The Ministry of External Affairs said, this matter is very sensitive and the Government of India is helping in every possible way. The government has maintained the appointment of a lawyer, regular consular visits and local authorities for legal help of Nimisha.
The ministry said that due to the efforts made in recent times, the family members of Nimisha Priya got time to compromise and due to this the hanging on July 16, 2025 has been postponed.
There are still challenges
Although there is relief, serious challenges are still left. The Ministry of External Affairs said that India is also in touch with other friendly countries and is constantly monitoring the matter.
Who is Nimisha Priya?
Nimisha Priya is a nurse from Kerala, who went to Yemen for a job in 2008. A few years later he started his own clinic there. He was arrested in 2017, when he was accused of killing his Yemeni business partner Talal Abdo Mehdi. Investigation said that Nimisha tried to give her sleep medicine to withdraw her passport but she died.
He was convicted in 2018. The death was sentenced to death in 2020 and in 2023, Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council upheld the decision. However, the option of apology was kept open.
Shock to hopes of apology
Under Sharia Act, the victim’s family has the right to forgive in exchange for blood money. But Abdelfatah Mehdi, who is the brother of the deceased Talal, clearly stated that cannot be forgiven for this crime.
