Rani Durgavati’s name in India’s history is always remembered for courage and sacrifice. She was the heroine of the Gondwana kingdom, who bravely fought against the Mughals and sacrificed her life to protect the motherland.
Rani Durgavati was born on 5 October 1524 in Kalinjar Fort (Banda, Uttar Pradesh). He was born on the day of Durgashtami, hence he was named Durgavati. His father was King Kirtisinh Chandel and he was his only child.
Marriage and the reins of the kingdom
Rani Durgavati was married to Dalpat Shah, son of King Sangram Shah of Gondwana. King Dalpat Shah passed away only four years after marriage. At that time his son Narayan was only three years old. At the young state of the son, Rani Durgavati took over the reins of the kingdom in her hands. The present Jabalpur was the center of his rule.
Mughal Emperor Akbar’s army invaded Gondwana in the Mughal’s war
1562. Despite the low number of soldiers, Rani Durgavati faced the war fiercely. Initially, his army forced the Mughals to back down, but the next day he returned with more soldiers. Rani Durgavati rode on her white elephant and stood in the battlefield. His son was injured during the war, which he sent to a safe place. He was left with only 300 soldiers and he himself was seriously injured.
Rani Durgavati’s sacrifice
In the injured state, his soldiers requested him to save his life, but he refused to back down. He asked his Diwan Aadhaar Singh to take his life, but he could not do so. Finally Rani Durgavati sacrificed her dagger in her chest and sacrificed. Their sacrifice is considered a symbol of protecting the motherland and self -esteem.
