‘Preparations for major changes in nuclear energy sector, path will open for private companies’, said PM Modi


The government is preparing to bring the Atomic Energy Bill, 2025 in the winter session of Parliament. This bill will allow private companies to set up nuclear power plants. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also announced on Thursday (November 27, 2025) to open the domestic nuclear sector for private companies.

The government is going to bring this bill to control the use and regulation of nuclear energy in India. At present, all nuclear power plants in the country are built through government companies like NPCL. After the new bill, both Indian and foreign private companies will be able to enter into the production of nuclear power.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated Indian space startup Skyroots Infinity Campus in Hyderabad today. During this he said, ‘We are also going to take steps in a very important sector. We are moving towards opening the nuclear sector also. In this sector also, we are going to lay the foundation for the strong role of the private sector. This will create opportunities in small modular reactors, advanced reactors and nuclear innovation. This reform will give new strength to our energy security and technological leadership.

America is the world’s largest producer of nuclear power, accounting for 30 percent of the world’s nuclear energy production. Private companies produce 80 percent of America’s nuclear energy. China is the second largest producer of nuclear energy. Its global share is 16 percent and China’s entire nuclear energy production is done through government companies. There is no involvement of private companies in this.

France has 14 percent share in the world’s nuclear power production and here also almost the entire production is done by the government company EDF. Russia is the fourth largest producer, its share in the world’s nuclear power production is 8 percent and the entire production is done by the government company Rostoam. At number five is South Korea, whose global share is seven percent and here also the entire production of nuclear energy is done by the government company KHNP.
