Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party and many other opposition parties have accused Madurai Bench judge Justice G. of Madras High Court, who gave the verdict in the Karthigai Deepam case. R. The notice regarding the proposal to remove Swaminathan from the post was submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday (December 9, 2025). He alleged that his conduct raises serious questions regarding the impartiality, transparency and secular functioning of the judiciary.
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, DMK leader TR Baalu and many other leaders met Om Birla and gave this notice. This notice has been signed by 107 opposition MPs.
The opposition parties said in the notice, ‘Justice G.R. Swaminathan’s conduct raises serious questions regarding the impartiality, transparency and secular functioning of the judiciary. It appears that senior advocate M. Sricharan Ranganathan, associated with the case, was given undue favor and advocates from a particular community were also favoured.
The notice also claims that the cases were decided on the basis of a particular political ideology and against the secular principles of the Indian Constitution. Meanwhile, Left parties alleged that efforts were being made to create communal tension in Tamil Nadu by creating controversies over religious places.
CPI (M), CPI (ML), Revolutionary Socialist Party (RCP) and All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) have addressed Madurai MP Su. Condemned the targeting of Venkatesan. DMK alleges that after the judge’s decision, a situation of communal conflict has been created by the BJP.
The Tamil Nadu government has moved the Supreme Court against the Madras High Court order granting permission to burn Karthigai Deepam in the temple located near the Dargah. The Supreme Court on December 5 had agreed to hear the Tamil Nadu government’s plea against the Madras High Court order allowing devotees of the Arulmighu Subramaniam Swamy temple near the dargah to light the traditional Karthigai Deepam lamp at ‘Deepthoon’, a stone lamp pillar located at Tiruparamkundram.
The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on December 4 dismissed an inter-court appeal filed by the Madurai District Collector and the city Police Commissioner and upheld the single judge’s order allowing devotees to light the Karthigai Deepam lamp at Deepthoon.
When the order was not implemented, the single judge passed another order on December 3, allowing the devotees to light the lamps themselves and directed the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to ensure their safety.
