‘Population of Hindu and Muslim community by 2041 ….’, Himant Biswa Sarma’s big claim regarding census in Assam

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has once again made a shocking claim about the population in the state. He said in a press conference held after a cabinet meeting in Dibrugarh on Wednesday (July 24, 2025) that if the current population growth rate in Assam continues in the same way, the population of Hindu and Muslim community could be almost equal by 2041.

According to the PTI report, Himant Biswa Sarma said that this is not my view on the statement of ‘Assam will become a minority in Assam’. This is the result of census. Today, according to the 2011 census, 34 percent of the population in Assam is minority, so if you remove 3 percent indigenous Assamese Muslims, then 31 percent Muslims have migrated to Assam.

‘Muslim population is growing rapidly in the state’
He further said that if you guess on the basis of 2021, 2031 and 2041, then you come to the position of about 50-50. So this is not my idea. I am only telling the statistical census report.

The Chief Minister of Assam said that if the population is analyzed on the basis of the census data of the last decades, then it is clear that the Muslim population in the state is increasing rapidly, if this speed continues, then by 2041, the Hindu and Muslim population will be around 50-50. He said that the census figures and their calculations are giving this indication.

‘A total of 6 districts were Muslim -dominated in 2001’
He also said that in 2001, when there were a total of 23 districts in the state, 6 districts were Muslim -dominated, including Dhubri, Barpeta, Nagaon, Karimganj, Hylakandi and Golpara. However, by the 2011 census, the districts in Assam increased to 27 and 9 of them had become Muslim -dominated, such as Morigaon, Darrang and Bongaigaon. According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, this number has now reached at least 11 districts, although the 2021 census report has not been made public yet.
