There was a phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on the occasion of Diwali. This was confirmed by PM Modi himself. However, this conversation has created a new stir in India-America relations. This phone call showed signs of warmth and cooperation between the two leaders. However, now this call has become a cause of diplomatic controversy. The Indian government completely rejected the claim that there was any kind of conversation between PM Modi and Trump regarding India-Pakistan.
A senior official of India’s Foreign Ministry, on condition of anonymity, said that there was no discussion on Pakistan in the conversation between the Prime Minister and President Trump. This is the second time when India has publicly refuted Trump’s statements. Even before this, India had rejected Trump’s claim in which he had said that Modi had assured to stop importing oil from Russia.
Uneasiness increased due to Trump’s statement
Trump had said during the Diwali program at the White House on Tuesday (21 October 2025) that he spoke to Modi and discussed the issue related to the India-Pakistan war. After his statement, uneasiness spread in Indian diplomatic circles. India clearly denied that PM Modi had any discussion with Trump regarding Pakistan. India had earlier also said that America had not interfered in any way in the ceasefire after Operation Sindoor. However, Donald Trump has mentioned on different occasions that America had a role in the India-Pakistan ceasefire. Despite this, India has always said that it never accepts the role of a third party in the matter related to Kashmir and especially Pakistan.
Modi’s ASEAN Summit
Prime Minister Modi is considering delivering a virtual address at the ASEAN/East Asia Summit to be held in Malaysia later this week. This decision can probably be taken to maintain focus on Bihar assembly elections. If this happens, it will also become clear that Trump and Modi will not meet face to face in the near future. Trump had earlier announced that he would attend this conference to be held in Malaysia. However, there are also reports that Trump will not attend the G-20 summit to be held in South Africa next month, where Modi is scheduled to be present.

Relations between India and America have been going through a period of constant tension and mistrust in the last few months. While on one hand a trade agreement is pending between the two countries, on the other hand Trump’s statements regarding Pakistan have deepened the diplomatic disagreement. Earlier in June also, Prime Minister Modi had rejected Trump’s invitation to visit the White House. This step was much talked about at that time, because during the same period the US administration had also welcomed Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir. According to sources, Prime Minister Modi not personally attending the ASEAN Summit is not just a matter of foreign policy, but it is directly related to the preparations for the Bihar Assembly elections.
