‘PM is suppressing the voice of Tamil people’, Rahul Gandhi angry over ban on release of Jan Nayakan movie

On January 13, 2026, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has raised questions on stopping Vijay Thalapathy’s film ‘Jana Nayakan’. He said, ‘The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is trying to stop Jan Nayakan, which is an attack on Tamil culture. Modi ji, you will never succeed in suppressing the voice of Tamil people.

This film was to be released in theaters on 9 January 2026. But on the same day the Madras High Court ordered a stay on the release.

Censor Board did not approve the release

TVK party chief and actor Vijay Thalapathy’s film has not received approval for release from the Censor Board. There were already discussions going on about the political message of the film and now the opposition is seeing its stopping as political interference.

The film makers have approached the Supreme Court, so that the decision of the Madras High Court can be challenged and the film can be released.

Why was the release of Jan Nayakan banned?

The producers of Jan Nayakan claim that they had submitted the movie to the Censor Board for certificate last year. Suggestions were also received to make changes in some scenes and mute the dialogues. But due to a complaint alleging that it hurt religious sentiments, the Censor Board put its certificate on hold and the scheduled release of the movie was also postponed.

Congress stands with Vijay Thalapathy

Earlier, Congress leader Praveen Chakraborty had met TVK chief Vijay. During that time, he had said that the Tamil Nadu government has huge debt and had compared the state with Uttar Pradesh, which sparked a political debate.
