Now when you receive a call on your mobile, not only the number but also the real name of the caller will be visible. The Department of Telecommunications i.e. DoT has instructed all the telecom companies to start calling name presentation service in at least one circle within the next one week. Now after the implementation of this facility, you will know from whose name the call is coming even before you pick up the phone.
TRAI released its recommendations on this service in February 2024, under which along with the calling number, the name of the person or company who has taken the SIM card in his name will also be visible on the screen. That is, now the identity of the caller will be determined only by the name entered in the Customer Application Form (CAF). This step is considered important in the direction of stopping fake calls, fraud and spam calls.
Telecom companies will have to provide the facility
As per TRAI recommendations, CNAP will be included as a ‘Supplementary Service’ in the Indian telecom network. For this, Calling Line Identification (CLI) has been redefined, so that the caller can be identified by both number and name. All telecom companies, like Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL will have to provide this facility to their customers.
The name of the caller will be the same as he has entered in his documents while taking the SIM. At the same time, entities having corporate or business connections will be given the facility to display their ‘preferred name’ such as trademark or GST registered name, provided they can produce proof of ownership.
CNAP feature in mobile devices
After the implementation of this service, the telecom network will show the name of the caller on the call receiver’s phone, making it easy to find out whether the call is real or suspicious. The government has also indicated that the CNAP feature may be made mandatory in all new mobile devices in the future.
After the implementation of CNAP feature, the incidents of spam calls and fraud are expected to reduce across the country. This service can prove to be an alternative to third party apps like Truecaller, because now the name information will be available directly from the telecom network. Now in the coming days, when a call comes, it will be written on the phone screen, ‘When the call comes, the real name will be visible.’
