As soon as the name of the Mughal Empire comes, a picture of Shan-o-Shaukat, magnificent palace and immense wealth emerges in front of us, but there was also a queen in this empire who not only broke the tradition of harem but also overtakes men in both governance and hunting. This queen was Nur Jahan, whose real name was Meher-un-Nisa.
Nur Jahan was first married to a Mughal warlord, but after his death, he was married to the Mughal emperor Jahangir in 1611. Jahangir (Salim) was drunk in alcohol and opium and the governance started getting loose. At such a time, Nur Jahan took over the reins of the kingdom. He took administrative decisions, issued decree and even inscribed his name on coins. Historians believe that the real strength during Jahangir’s reign was in the hands of Nur Jahan.
Nur Jahan’s courage incident
Historian Ruby Lal’s book Empress: The Astonishing Reign of Nur Jahan mentions an incident. Once, Nur Jahan rode on the elephant and went out on hunting. Then a cheetah came to attack. The elephant started running out of panic, but Nur Jahan killed the leopard in the same bullet without fear. This incident is considered a great evidence of Nur Jahan’s bravery and mastery in hunting.
Political strength of Nur Jahan
When Jahangir was taken captive, Nur Jahan himself led the war and rescued him. He took diplomatic decisions and made his strong presence in the court. He had a profound influence on the policies and strategies of the Mughal Empire.
Haram’s tradition breaking queen
In the Mughal period, Haram was designed to protect women, where non -men’s entry was forbidden. But Nur Jahan broke these boundaries and interfered directly into politics. He took part in war and hunting. Not only Begum, but also established as a ruler.
