According to the report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in 2023, more cases of crime against women have been reported compared to the last two years. Most of the cases were registered in Uttar Pradesh. It is followed by Maharashtra, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. According to the report, in 2023, about 4.5 lakh such cases were seen across the country.
According to the PTI report, a total of 4,48,211 cases of crime were registered against women in 2023, while in 2022 there were 4,45,256 in 2022 and 4,28,278 in 2021. Statistics taken from police records of states and union territories show that there are 66.2 incidents on the national crime rate per lakh female population, which is based on an estimated female population estimate of 6,770 lakhs in mid -year.
The rate of filing the total charge sheet in these cases was 77.6 percent in 2023. Maximum 66,381 cases were registered in Uttar Pradesh, followed by 47,101 in Maharashtra, 45,450 in Rajasthan, 34,691 in West Bengal and 32,342 in Madhya Pradesh.
Telangana topped the female population with 124.9 crime rates, while Rajasthan 114.8, Odisha 112.4, Haryana 110.3 and 86.1 crime rates were registered in Kerala. Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) had the highest number of cruelty cases by spouses, of which 133,676 cases were registered and their rate was 19.7.
88,605 cases of kidnapping and hostage of women were registered and their rate was 13.1. There were 83,891 cases of attacks with the intention of dissolving the dignity of women while 29,670 cases of rape were registered.
A total of 6,156 cases of dowry murder were registered, whose rate was 0.9, 4,825 cases of abetment for suicide, which were 0.7, and 8,823 cases of dignity were registered, which had a rate of 1.3. There were 28,821 cases of rape of women aged eighteen and above and 849 cases of rape of girls below 18 years.
2,796 cases of rape attempt were registered and an acid attack was reported in 113 cases. A total of 87,850 cases of crimes were registered against women under special and local laws. 15,489 cases were registered under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, while 1,788 cases related to women victims were registered under the Immoral Trade (Prevention) Act, 1956. 632 cases were registered under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
31 cases have been registered under the Pornographic Dictionary (Prohibition) Act, 1986, 40,046 cases of rape of children under the Protection of Sexual Offenses, 40,146 cases of sexual harassment, 22,149 cases of sexual harassment, 2,778 cases for sexual harassment, 698 cases of using children for pornography and 513 cases under other laws. Police settlement data revealed that 185,961 cases were pending for investigation from previous years, while 4,48,211 new cases were registered and 987 were transferred. Thus there were a total of 635,159 cases.
Out of these, chargesheets were filed in 1,82,219 cases, that is, the rate of filing the charge sheet was 77.6 percent. The rate of pending cases was 28.7 percent.
