Union Home Minister Amit Shah has approved the proposal of the Assam government, in which permission was sought for the state police to file a charge sheet against the accused in the case of the death of famous singer Zubin Garg. This approval has been given under Section 208 of BNSS (Indian Civil Security Code). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave this information on Tuesday.
Approval received on the day of Zubin Garg’s birthday
The Chief Minister of Assam said that this approval was received exactly on the day when it was Zubin Garg’s birthday. Calling it a coincidence, he shared the information on social media. Sarma wrote on Let us tell you that on the occasion of the 53rd birth anniversary of Assam’s cultural icon Zubin Garg, many programs were organized across the state on Tuesday.
What does Section 208 say?
The Chief Minister clarified that according to Section 208 of the BNSS, if a crime has been committed outside India, the court can start trial in that case only if the Central Government gives prior approval. According to Sarma, this approval is ‘an important legal step, due to which the state police can now file a charge sheet and start further legal action.’
Zubin Garg died in Singapore
Zubin Garg died on September 19, 2025 in Singapore. He had gone there to participate in the ‘North East India Festival’ (NEIF). After his last rites, several FIRs were registered in Assam, after which the state government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT). As the investigation progressed, seven people were detained, including festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta and his manager Siddharth Sharma.
