A heart-wrenching incident took place in Manikyamma Guda area near Maheshwaram on the Hyderabad-Bengaluru National Highway. A goods lorry coming from Bengaluru towards Hyderabad suddenly came under the influence of high tension electric wire and within no time the entire lorry became a ball of fire.
The lorry was going from Bengaluru to Hyderabad carrying goods from Banaswadi. As the vehicle reached Manikyamma Guda, the lorry caught fire after coming in contact with the high tension electrical wires passing over the road. The fire spread so fast that the driver had to abandon the vehicle and run away. Within a few minutes the lorry was completely engulfed in flames.
Long queues of vehicles on the highway
The most horrifying scene occurred when powerful explosions like firecrackers started happening in between the goods loaded in the lorry. One after the other, the sounds of explosions were heard far and wide and there was chaos in the entire area. People nearby got scared and moved away. No one knew where the next explosion would occur. Traffic on the national highway came to a standstill and long queues of vehicles formed on both sides.
Fire department vehicles reached the spot
As soon as the information was received, fire department vehicles reached the spot and started trying to extinguish the fire. It took a lot of effort to control the fire. It is a matter of relief that no one was injured in this accident, the driver and other people narrowly escaped. But the entire cargo loaded in the lorry was burnt to ashes.
In the preliminary investigation, high tension electric wire is being considered as the main cause of the accident. In March this year itself, 20 furniture shops were burnt to ashes in Bachupalli due to falling of high tension wire. There was no casualty in that case either. These frequent incidents have raised serious questions on the safety and proper maintenance of electric wires in the state. Police and electricity department have started investigating the matter.
