Amid supporting the notice seeking impeachment against Justice Yashwant Verma on behalf of almost all parties, Marxist Communist Party (CPI -M) leader John Britas said on Saturday (July 19, 2025) that the notice of impeachment against Justice Shekhar Yadav should also be considered.
Justice Verma has been under question since the sacks of half -burnt notes were found in the outskirts of his residence in Delhi in March this year. At that time he was a judge of the Delhi High Court. Justice Verma denied the allegations and said that neither he nor any member of his family had kept money in the storehouse.
John Britas in favor of impeachment
Britas said, ‘We believe that there is a need to maintain the integrity and transparency of the judiciary. We are in favor of impeachment against Justice Verma. We have already expressed their desire to be a part of the impeachment process. He said that the notice seeking impeachment against Justice Yadav is also pending with the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
Government should take both matters together
Britas told ‘PTI’ that a notice is pending with the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha regarding Justice Shekhar Yadav. All his statements were against the basic principles of the Indian Constitution. Therefore, I think the government will raise both these matters together.
He also said that Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has said that he is coordinating with leaders of various parties on impeachment motion against Justice Verma, to ensure that the unified attitude of Parliament comes out. Not the government, but the members of Parliament are in favor of bringing a proposal to remove Justice Verma by rising above the party line.
What was the case of Justice Shekhar Yadav?
In December last year, opposition MPs presented a notice of impeachment against Justice Shekhar Yadav in the Rajya Sabha, as they allegedly gave a hate speech at a meeting last year. The CPI (M) leader also said that it is unfortunate that the responsibility of allocating the budget for Manipur has been entrusted to the Parliament.
He said, ‘It is unfortunate that Parliament has to pass the budget of Manipur. Parliament has to increase President’s rule again and our honorable Prime Minister has time to visit so many countries, but does not have time to go to Manipur or raise the issue of Manipur in Parliament.
