The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved India’s claim to be hosted by India’s 2030 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday (August 27, 2025) and described Ahmedabad as an ideal host due to ‘world -class stadiums, sophisticated practice facilities and sports culture’.
The decision came a few days after the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) agreed. India has submitted a letter of intent, expressing a desire for the Commonwealth Games 2030. According to a PIB release, ‘The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of Commonwealth Games 2030.’
Necessary grant assistance approved to Gujarat government
It said, “The cabinet approved the required grant assistance to the Government of Gujarat in the event of signing the host cooperation agreement (HCA) with necessary guarantees from the concerned ministries, departments and authorities.”
The last date for submission of bid for the claim is 31 August. IOA can complete the process in the next 48 hours. India last hosted the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010. The Commonwealth Games General Assembly will take a decision on the host country in Glasgow in the last week of November. India’s possibility of hosting has become strong after Canada’s financial reasons are retreated.
Ideal city for hosting Ahmedabad Games
The PIB’s statement issued after the cabinet meeting said that Ahmedabad will be an ideal city to host sports. It said, ‘Ahmedabad has world class stadium, state -of -the -art practice facilities and sports culture. The ICC 2023 Cricket World Cup final has been successfully organized at the world’s largest stadium Narendra Modi Stadium.
India has also expressed his desire to host the 2036 Olympic Games and is also a leader in the Ahmedabad race for it. Infrastructure is being prepared for this. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is one of the main venue, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel with Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, in which construction work is going on.
Players from 72 countries participate
Players from 72 countries participate in the Commonwealth Games and the government believes that this will boost local businesses and generate revenue. The release said, “Apart from this, experts from many fields like Sports Science, Event Management, Logistics and Transport Coordinator, Broadcasting and Media, IT, Communication and Public Relations will get a chance.”
The government believes that hosting such a big event will strengthen the spirit of national pride and unity. The release said, ‘This will increase the morale of the country. This will inspire the new generation players to try their hand in sports as an alternative to career and will increase participation in sports at all levels.
Close budget of Rs 1300 crore
Commonwealth Games will be held in 2026 Glasgow, which does not have sports like wrestling, shooting, badminton and hockey. Glasgow wants to do all the games within a radius of about 12 kilometers and it has kept the budget close to Rs 1300 crore. The IOA has clearly stated that if India hosts 2030 sports, then all these sports will be included in it. India had spent Rs 70000 crore on hosting the 2010 Commonwealth Games, while the original budget was worth Rs 1600 crore.
