Government’s strictness on air fares and refunds amid Indigo crisis, new rules imposed on airlines

Due to Indigo crisis, flights have been canceled on a large scale in the country’s air services, due to which passengers are facing a lot of trouble. In view of this situation, the Aviation Ministry has taken strict steps regarding increase in fares and refunds, so that the passengers can get relief.

Government control on fares
The ministry expressed concern over the sudden increase in fares by some airlines and has imposed fare caps on all affected routes. Now the airlines will follow the fixed fare limit without any exception and this rule will remain in force until the situation becomes normal. The ministry has made it clear that the purpose of this step is to maintain price discipline in the market and to prevent charging arbitrary fares from passengers in times of crisis. The government has also said that immediate regulatory action will be taken against any airline that does not follow this rule.

Strict instructions on refund and rebooking
A large number of refund complaints were being lodged by passengers after the cancellation of flights, after which the Ministry has directed IndiGo to compulsorily complete all the pending refunds by 8 pm on 7th December 2025. Along with this, airlines have also been ordered that no rebooking or rescheduling charges will be taken from the passengers whose journey has been canceled or affected. The ministry has warned that in case of delay in the refund process or non-compliance of the order, immediate action will be taken against the airline.

Safety and relief of passengers is the priority of the government.
The government has said that the main objective of this decision is to provide relief to passengers in distress, which include senior citizens, students, patients and those who have to travel in emergency situations. The government says that in this situation it is not appropriate to put additional financial burden on the passengers. The ministry said that it is doing real-time monitoring of airline fares and refund processes. For this, continuous coordination is being done with airlines and online ticket booking platforms, so that any irregularity can be detected immediately and action can be taken on it.
