West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Tuesday (July 15, 2025) that her government would not implement any such instructions, dismissing reports of banning popular breakfast like Samosa and Jalebi.
This remark of Mamta has come after the Union Health Ministry urged all ministries and departments to apply the amount of sugar and oil in breakfast like Samosa, Kachori, Pizza, Burger, French Fries, Sittle Drinks, Gulab Jamun and Vadapav, so that healthy lifestyle can be promoted and dealing with obesity.
What did Mamta say about banning samosa jalebi?
The Trinamool Congress supremo said in a post on X, “Some reports in the media have told that samosas/jalebi cannot be eaten from now on the instructions of the Ministry of Health. It is not a notification issued by the West Bengal government. We are not interfering in every matter. We will not implement it. Do not interfere in food habits. “
Health Ministry has issued instructions
The Ministry of Health has also called for printing health messages on all official stationery like letterheads, envelopes, notepads, folders and publications to fight obesity. However, Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh called the advice a fatwa and announced that the state would not implement it.
Ghosh said, “The Center is eyeing samosas and jalebi. Different types of fatwa are being issued. Such fatwa will not be implemented in West Bengal under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee.” He said that people have complete freedom to enjoy these dishes, provided their quality remains. Ghosh said, “Who eats and how; there will be no interference in Bengal.”
Expressing surprise, he said whether samosas and jalebi are like cigarettes, in relation to which legal warnings are required.
