The US had announced to impose 25% additional tariffs on India to buy oil from Russia. After this, the total tariff increased to 50%. This tariff has come into force from August 27, 2025. This decision of Trump has shocked India’s exports. MJ Akbar, who was a minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, has targeted this decision of America.
Former Minister of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar attacked Trump and said-‘This tariff was imposed because we buy oil from Russia. But Germany kept buying oil from Russia during the whole war, why does it not have 50% tariff on it? China buys gas and energy more than us.
Trump looks unsafe about China- Akbar
In a conversation with news agency ANI, Akbar further said, ‘Trump looks uncertain and insecure about China. This game of tariff has resumed the cool relationship between India and China, which has affected the geopolitical and bilateral levels. It is true that some items will be affected, but our total international trade will not suffer a huge loss. American arguments have collapsed in front of facts and truth.
Central government’s answer- emphasis on self-reliant India
Union Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh also gave a statement regarding Trump Tariff. He said, ‘Every country has the ability to become self -sufficient and we also want the same. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, we have made strong relations with many countries of the world. Our trade in Africa is continuously increasing. It is true that we have been imposed inappropriate tariffs without reason, but we will ensure that the energy needs of our people are met.
