From green energy to defence, what issues were discussed between Piyush Goyal and the German minister in Berlin?


Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a meeting with Germany’s Economic Affairs and Energy Minister Katharina Reiche in Berlin on Thursday (October 23, 2025). Both the leaders discussed increasing cooperation between India and Germany on green energy, new and emerging technology and defence.

In a post on the social media handle ‘X’, Goyal wrote, ‘It was a great pleasure to meet Germany’s Economic Affairs and Energy Minister Katharina Reiche in Berlin. Our discussions focused on strengthening India-Germany relations in the field of trade and investment, green energy, new and emerging technologies and joint industrial and technical partnership in the defense sector. Germany’s commitment to finalizing the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was also discussed in the conversation.

Industry Minister participated in the round table meeting

The Union Minister further wrote, ‘I highlighted in the meeting how India’s vast talent pool, coupled with our efforts to ease doing business, offers attractive prospects for German companies to diversify investments and strengthen supply chain resilience.’

Apart from this, Goyal also participated in a round table meeting in Germany. In another post, the Union Minister said that it was a great pleasure to participate in a round table meeting with the CEOs of German Mittelstand (SME) companies and Indian companies.

Discussion on ways to form industrial partnerships

The Union Minister further said that the meeting highlighted the key opportunities offered by India in innovation and sustainable manufacturing and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation, trade and investment ties between Indian and German companies and build strong industrial partnerships for mutual development.

According to the government statement, the year 2025 is the 25th year of India-Germany strategic partnership. Piyush Goyal is on a tour of Germany from 23 October. The Union Minister’s visit to Berlin is an important milestone in enhancing India’s engagement with Germany, showcasing the depth, resilience and long-term strength of bilateral relations.
