US President Donald Trump has said that America’s tech companies need foreign skilled employees. Without them, it would be difficult for Americans to learn how to make computer chips and other technological items. He said this at the US-Saudi Investment Forum. He told that American workers can learn new technology only with the help of foreign workers.
Trump’s supporters are angry with this statement. They feel that Trump is now moving away from the policy of America First. At the same time, this news is good for Indian professionals, because a large part of the foreign skilled employees in America are Indians.
What did Trump say?
Trump said, “If you open a billion-dollar computer chip factory, like the one being done in Arizona, you cannot hire unemployed people. Thousands of people will have to be brought in and I would welcome them. They will teach our people how computer chips and other technology are made.” Saudi and American big business leaders were also present at this event, including Nvidia CEO Jenson Huang and Elon Musk.
Trump said that there are no people doing special technical work in America. Therefore, foreign workers are needed to run new industries. He told MAGA supporters that they would have to endure criticism, but these people would help teach new technology to American workers.
73% of H-1B holders are Indians
Last week, in an interview with Fox News, Trump had said that H-1B visas are needed because America does not have all kinds of technical talent. The H-1B visa allows American companies to hire foreign skilled workers for up to six years.
India has always played a major role in this visa. Currently 73% of H-1B holders are Indians. However, recently many Republicans and Trump allies voiced their opposition to this visa and the administration increased the visa application fee to $100,000.
