Explained: Tejashwi’s hollow promise! 2.44 crore government jobs are needed in Bihar, about 2 crore in the entire country, how will it be filled?

On October 9, Tejashwi Yadav made a new election promise while holding a press conference in Bihar. He said, ‘As soon as the government is formed, every family will be given a government job. Many people will have a question on what we are announcing, how will we announce it? We have extracted all the data. We have got all the surveys done and I pledge that we will do whatever else is possible.

So let us understand in ABP Explainer whether every family will get a government job, how much truth is there in Tejashwi’s promise and whether it is possible to fulfill it or not…

Question 1- What is Tejashwi Yadav’s promise of ‘Job for every household’?
answer- Tejashwi Yadav said, ‘Now there will be a renaissance of jobs in Bihar. Every family in Bihar which does not have a government job will be compulsorily given a job by making a new Act. As soon as the government is formed, we will make an Act within 20 days and within 20 months there will be no household left in Bihar which does not have a government job.

he adds, ‘Now we will give jobs to every household. The victory will be celebrated in the form of providing government jobs to every household and taking Bihar forward on a new path of development by setting up industries in Bihar, establishing educational cities, setting up IT parks, promoting agriculture and dairy based industries.

Tejashwi claimed, ‘Now not just one or two people or parties, but the entire Bihar government will be run. If one person from every family is in a government job, then every family will have direct participation in the government.

Tejashwi claimed that if our government is formed, our victory will be celebrated by giving government jobs to every household.

Question 2- Is Tejashwi’s promise of ‘Job in every house’ hollow, if yes then how?
answer- Political expert Harshvardhan Tripathi says, ‘It is not only difficult but impossible to provide government jobs to every household in Bihar. This is just an election promise, which is completely hollow. In any state or country, government jobs do not arise because of unemployment, but to complete government work.

In fact, according to the Bihar caste survey of 2023, the state has a population of 13.07 crore. In this, the data of the families is not released. But according to the calculations of Periodic Labor Force Survey i.e. PLFS, on an average a family in Bihar has 5 members. This is slightly higher than the national average of 4.4, because Bihar is rural-dominant. That means about 2.62 crore families live in Bihar.

According to the State Finance Report of RBI, there are about 15-18 lakh government jobs in the state, which are in departments like state government, local bodies, education and health.

Harshvardhan Tripathi says, ‘If we assume that all the families with 15 to 18 lakh government jobs are separate, then only 6-7% of the families are connected with government jobs. The remaining 2.44 crore families i.e. 93 to 94% do not have any government job. There are about 2 crore government jobs in the entire country. That means Tejashwi wants to give more government jobs in Bihar alone than in the entire country.

At the same time, election analyst Amitabh Tiwari says, ‘The government does not even have the budget to provide just one government job to every family in Bihar. Suppose if the salary of one job is Rs 30 thousand per month, then the annual budget for 2.44 crore jobs should be around Rs 7.3 lakh crore, which is double the budget of Bihar of Rs 3.17 lakh crore. This means that even if the entire state budget is spent on providing government jobs, it will still be less.

Question 3- So will Tejashwi’s promise of employment opportunities in Bihar be a cover up?
answer: According to the 2023-24 report of the Periodic Labor Force Survey i.e. PLFS, the unemployment rate among youth above 15 years of age in Bihar is 3.2%. According to the report of Indian Express, about 2.6 lakh people migrated from Bihar for jobs in 2025. Even if Tejashwi provides government jobs or employment to only so many people, it is a big deal.

Amitabh Tiwari says, ‘If it was so easy to provide employment in Bihar, then the youth of the state would not have gone out of the state to get jobs. To provide employment opportunities, new startups will have to be started in the state, new companies will be opened and small industries will have to be supported. The government will not be able to do this work. For this, private companies will have to come forward. Now this sounds easy, but it is also very difficult. Private sectors will also invest in Bihar only when they will benefit.
