The Supreme Court has expressed displeasure over the continuation of the straw. The court has said on Wednesday (September 17, 2025) that it is not enough to punish the officers who failed to stop it. Now the time has come that the farmers who burn the straw should also be allowed to raise the result. The court asked the government to consider making a provision to punish the farmers who burn the straw.
Every year in the month of October-November, the straw burning in Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh covers Delhi-NCR in a sheet of smoke. The Supreme Court has issued instructions from time to time regarding this pollution. This includes things such as providing machines to the farmers to remove the straw from the field, spreading awareness and adopting measures encouraging them to prevent stubble. Now the court has adopted a strict attitude and said that it is not enough to encourage only, there should also be a provision of punishment.
Stubble burning incidence less than before
The court said these things when the Punjab government counsel claimed that the incidents of stubble burning had reduced before. In response, senior advocate Aparajita Singh, who is assisting the court as amicus curie in the case, said that stubble was lit last year when the monitoring satellites were not there. The farmers were getting this information from somewhere and they were working accordingly.
Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, who is advocating for the punishment of the farmers, drew the attention that till now there has been a policy of not punishing the farmers. On this, the Chief Justice said, ‘If some people go to jail, then the correct message will go from it. If your intention is really protecting the environment, then why is it hesitant? Farmers are special for everyone. Because of them we eat food, but this does not mean that the environment is abandoned.
Court’s displeasure over the incidents of stubble burning
Last year too, the court expressed displeasure over the incidents of burning stubble, saying that it is not only a violation of the law, but also a violation of the right to life of citizens. In the hearing held on Wednesday, Justice Chandran, a member of the bench, said that the government should consider making provisions to discourage farmers from burning stubble, otherwise the court itself will issue an order on it.
