Ethiopia: Landslide caused devastation in Ethiopia; So far 50 people have died and 125 people are missing

According to AP news agency, Gamo Zone’s Disaster Response Director Mesfin Manuka said that the landslide occurred in Gamo Zone. This has affected Gacho Baba district, Kamba district and Boneke district. The search for the missing people in this accident is going on.

One person rescued alive from mud

Manuka has said that the rescue operation is continuing. During this time a person was pulled out alive from the mud. Abebe Agena, communications chief of Gacho Baba district, told the news agency that most of the dead were found buried in the mud. However, the situation is not clear as to how many people are buried in the mud in this natural disaster. Also, how many people’s houses have been affected.

South Ethiopia Regional State President Tilahun Kebede has expressed grief over this disaster. Also, people have been appealed to go to higher places amid heavy rains.

Landslides often occur during the rainy season

He said, ‘Considering that it is the rainy season and such disasters can happen again, I am appealing to the people living in high altitude and flood prone areas to take necessary precautions.’

Actually, landslides and floods due to heavy rains are a common phenomenon in Ethiopia. It is often seen during the rainy season. In July 2024, 229 people lost their lives in southern Ethiopia due to a landslide caused by heavy rains.
