Efforts to ensure the release of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, facing a death penalty in Yemen, have accelerated. According to MLA Chandy Oman, talks through migrant traders associated with Yemen in the Gulf countries, especially the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, are actively moving forward.

Oman said, ‘No attempt has been made to bypass the ongoing arbitration efforts under the leadership of the Kanthapuram Group. Positive news is expected in the coming days. Oman is the son of two -time former Chief Minister of Kerala, Oommen Chandy. Omon Chandy died in 2023. Till his death, he was active about this matter.

Oman has urged Kerala Governor Rajendra V. Arlekar to take the matter before the Center three times. Priya, a native of Palakkad, was convicted for the murder of her Yemeni business partner Talal Abdo Mahdi in 2017 in 2020.

According to reports, Priya took this step under pressure for her for several months after suffering physical and mental abuse, resulting in overdose of fatal medicine. This matter has come into the discussion again after Yemen officials fixed his death date on 16 July this year.

Muslim scholar of Kerala and Grand Mufti of India, Kanthapuram A.P. Due to the continuous intervention under the leadership of Abubakar Muslim, it was successful in banning the hanging at the last minute. His relationship with Mufti’s network, especially Yemen’s chief religious leader Sheikh Habib Umar is credited with paving the way for dialogue.

Jawad Mustafavi, a close aide of the Mufti, who studied Islamic philosophy in Yemen, emphasized that the sole purpose of his mission is his release. Diplomatic and human efforts are now focused on persuading the victim’s family, who is the final decisionor under the legal structure of Yemen.

According to the report, a Yemeni delegation, including women, contacted the bereaved family to find out the possibilities of reconciliation and compensation. Along with religious and human interventions in the Gulf countries, it is expected that Nimisha will not only be saved from the death penalty, but she will be able to return to Kerala.
