ED has taken major action in the case of big cyber fraud in the name of digital arrest. On Monday (December 22, 2025), the team of Jalandhar Zonal Office conducted simultaneous raids at 11 locations in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Assam. This action was taken in the ongoing money laundering investigation under PMLA. Many documents and digital devices were recovered and confiscated during the raid.
ED had started this investigation on the basis of FIR registered in Ludhiana Cyber Crime Police Station. Later, 9 more FIRs of digital arrest/cyber crime related to the same gang were registered by different police agencies, which were included in this investigation.
What was revealed in the ED investigation?
Investigation revealed that well-known Ludhiana industrialist SP Oswal was trapped in digital arrest by swindlers by posing as a CBI officer and showing fake government and judicial documents. After this, about Rs 7 crore was transferred from him to different accounts. Of these, Rs 5.24 crore were later recovered from the accounts and returned to the victim, while the remaining amount was sent to fake accounts.
Rumi Kalita used to get commission on the fraud amount
According to ED, these fake accounts were in the names of people like laborers and delivery boys. As soon as the money reached these accounts, it was either transferred further or immediately withdrawn in cash. Investigation also revealed that the log-in details of these accounts were used by a woman, Rumi Kalita. In return, he used to get some percentage commission of the defrauded amount. Evidence shows that she was deeply involved in layering and diversion of money.
PMLA court sent Rumi Kalita to 10 days remand.
Rumi Kalita was arrested on Tuesday (December 23, 2025) after the raid. Got four days transit remand from CJM court of Kamrup (Metro), Guwahati. After this, he was produced in the special PMLA court of Jalandhar, where the court granted ED custody for 10 days till January 2, 2026. ED had already conducted raids in this case on January 31, 2025, even then important documents were recovered. ED says that the investigation is ongoing and in the coming days, action may be taken against more people associated with this digital arrest fraud network.
