India is continuously moving towards making its military technology modern and self-reliant. Amidst this resolution, DRDO has registered another important achievement. The test of air-launched long range glide bomb from Su-30MKI fighter jet of Indian Air Force has been successful. This indigenous weapon has been named ‘Gaurav’, which is capable of destroying the target with accuracy from a distance.
‘Gaurav’ is a weapon which can attack the enemy without putting the aircraft at risk. After being released from the air, it glides for a long distance and attacks exactly where the target is. Due to attacking from a longer distance, it challenges the enemy’s air defense system. Its heavy weight and high destruction capability make it extremely effective in bunkers, fortified positions and mountain bases.
Two variants of DRDO weapon
DRDO has prepared this weapon in two forms. The first version is Gaurav-PCB, which is designed to penetrate fortified structures and ground bunkers. This can prove useful in operation conditions in hilly areas. The second variant is Gaurav-PF, which will be used to deliver multiple hits at open targets, military deployments or strategic targets.
‘Gaurav’ joins Su-30MKI
The Su-30MKI of the Indian Air Force is already equipped with many advanced weapons. Rudram missile, SAAW weapon system and BrahMos-A are already associated with it and now with the addition of ‘Gaurav’, this aircraft has become even more capable of attacking the ground from long distances. This combination gives the Air Force such capability for modern warfare, which is valued even by the world’s major armies.
Why is India rapidly manufacturing its engines and defense systems?
Dependence on foreign companies for fighter jet engines has been a major challenge for India for a long time. This is the reason why indigenous fighter aircraft projects like Tejas Mk2 and AMCA were delayed. Now both the government and DRDO are jointly emphasizing on developing their engines and weapon systems in the country. Bombs, missiles, radar, air defense systems, electronic warfare technology. Rapid progress is being made in all such areas so that India can become completely self-reliant in the coming years.
Expert opinion
Experts say that the successful test of ‘Gaurav’ is an indication of India’s changing military strategy. In the modern style of warfare, only that country is considered capable which can strike from a distance with high accuracy. With the arrival of ‘Gaurav’, India is further strengthening this capability and it will prove to increase the political power of the Air Force in future.
