Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has advised the private industry of the defense sector not to just assemble weapons in the country but to manufacture them themselves. The Defense Minister also called for increasing indigenous content in weapons being manufactured by private companies.
Addressing a program of the Society of Indian Defense Manufacturers (SIDM) on Monday, Rajnath Singh said that our aim should not be just to assemble in India, but in true sense we have to do technology based manufacturing within our country. We have to ensure that whatever technology is transferred (from abroad), it is powerful and also becomes a medium to strengthen our indigenous industry.
Defense Minister took cognizance of the complaints of the armed forces
In fact, there are continuous complaints coming from the armed forces that the weapons of private companies have less indigenous content or despite having foreign equipment, they are being presented as indigenous. Giving examples of countries like China, America and South Korea, the Defense Minister said that no matter any country, it cannot progress without R&D (Research and Development). Rajnath Singh said that if any good practice is being done anywhere in the world, then we should not hold back in adopting it.
Rajnath Singh said that it is also the government’s effort to ensure that military equipment is not just assembled in India, but a true manufacturing base is created, so that every screw, every circuit, every platform is made in India and realizes the spirit of Made in India, Made for the World.
‘Private industries are also becoming partners in self-reliant India’
The Defense Minister, however, praised the participation of indigenous companies in the defense sector and assured to provide a level playing field with government companies. He said that the result of the hard work we have done in the last 10 years is that our indigenous defense production, which was only Rs 46,425 crore in 2014, has today increased to a record of more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore. The big thing is that out of this, contribution of more than Rs 33,000 crore is coming from the private sector, which shows that private industries are also becoming partners in this campaign of self-reliant India.
Rajnath Singh said that the credit for the success of Operation Sindoor goes to the soldiers as well as all those who were engaged in making the mission successful by staying behind. Industry warriors like you, who worked tirelessly on the front of innovation, design and manufacturing. He is equally deserving of this victory.
