Contempt petition against lawyer who threw shoe towards CJI, Supreme Court will hear on this day


The court will hear on October 27 the petition regarding contempt action against lawyer Rakesh Kishore, who tried to throw a shoe at Chief Justice BR Gavai during the proceedings of the Supreme Court earlier this month.

According to the cause list of October 27 uploaded on the Supreme Court website, the petition filed by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) will be heard before the bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi.

Bharati Vidya Parishad suspended license

In a shocking security lapse on October 6, the 71-year-old teenager attempted to throw a shoe towards the Supreme Court in the court chamber, following which the Bharati Vidyagya Parishad suspended his license with immediate effect. The Chief Justice, who remained unperturbed during and after the incident, asked the court officials and the security personnel present to ‘ignore’ it and released the guilty lawyer with a warning.

PM Modi called the incident ‘condemnable’

The incident was widely condemned by various sections of the society and Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Chief Justice and termed the incident as ‘condemnable’. On October 16, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and SCBA President senior advocate Vikas Singh had requested for immediate listing of the petition for contempt proceedings against Rakesh Kishore.

Approval for action received on this day

Let us tell you that Attorney General of India R. Venkataramani had given permission to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against accused lawyer Rakesh Kishore on October 16, 2025. This approval was given on the application of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Vikas Singh.

R. Venkataramani said in the acceptance letter that he has carefully studied all the documents and facts related to this incident. The behavior of lawyer Rakesh Kishore falls under the category of criminal contempt under Section 2(c) of the Contempt of Court Act, 1971.
