Contempt case will be filed against lawyer Rakesh Kishore who threw shoe towards CJI Gavai

Advocate Rakesh Kishore, who threw his shoe at Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai (CJI BR Gavai), will face a contempt case. Some lawyers had sought consent from the Attorney General as per the rules and the Attorney General has given consent. On Thursday (October 16, 2025), the matter was placed before a bench headed by Justice Surya Kant. The bench has said to hear it after Diwali holidays.

Attorney General R Venkataramani has given consent to initiate contempt case against advocate Rakesh Kishore. On October 6, Rakesh Kishore had misbehaved with CJI Gavai. He moved towards CJI Gavai’s bench and then took out his shoe and tried to throw it at him. However, the security personnel present in the court stopped him and took him out of the court. Eyewitnesses told that while leaving, Rakesh Kishore raised slogans and said, ‘Hindustan will not tolerate the insult of Sanatan Dharma.’

Rakesh Kishore was released by the police after keeping him in custody for some time. Rakesh Kishore said that he is angry with CJI Gavai’s comment on the petition demanding directions for the reconstruction and reinstallation of the seven feet high statue of Lord Vishnu in Khajuraho temple. CJI Gavai had dismissed the petition calling it a matter of ASI jurisdiction and had told the petitioner, ‘You say that you are a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, then go and pray to him and ask the Lord himself to do something.’
