The Central Government on Wednesday (October 22, 2025) has released a draft to make major changes in the IT Rules, 2025. This draft will have a direct impact on all those social media users who use social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube or any app or website that creates Artificial Intelligence (AI) content.
The Central Government has now added a new word ‘Synthetically Generated Information’ in the IT Rules, 2021. That is, such content which has been created or changed by AI or any software in such a way that it appears real when seen and heard.
The government decided these rules in the new draft
In the draft prepared by the government to make changes in the IT Rules, 2025, many types of rules have also been explained in detail. Under which-
- Now companies or apps will add a unique label or metadata to every AI content.
- This label or mark must be clearly visible on at least 10 percent of the screen.
- At least 10 percent of the initial portion of the audio content should state that it is created by AI.
- Removing or changing this label would be outside the permission of the platform i.e. it cannot be removed.
How will people benefit from the new rules of the government?,
People will soon start seeing the benefits of these new rules of the Central Government. People will get to see AI Generated tags on Instagram and YouTube. There will be less chances of getting confused after watching deepfake videos. This will prevent fraudulent incidents like fake speeches of politicians or fake MMS of someone and no one will be misled by considering the video and audio created by AI as real.
Apart from this, responsibility will also be fixed on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X and YouTube etc. If a big social media company allows users to post content, then before uploading the content it will have to ask the user “Is this content generated by AI?”
Along with this, the platform itself will have to check through technical means whether the content is genuine or al-generated. If the content turns out to be AI-generated, it will need to be displayed with clear labels. If the platform knowingly allowed such deepfakes to spread without labels, it would be considered negligence on their part. However, the government has just released these rules in draft form. Before implementing this, the government will seek suggestions from the general public and companies of the country.
