Special Court of CBI, Mohali has given a big verdict in a fake encounter case in 1993. The court has convicted five retired officers of Punjab Police. All these officers were involved in such an encounter, which was shown in a fake way.
Names of police officers convicted
1. Bhupinderjit Singh (then DSP, Retired SSP)
2. Devinder Singh (then ASI, Retired DSP)
3. Gulberg Singh (erstwhile asi, retired inspector)
4. Suba Singh (erstwhile SHO, Retired Inspector)
5. Raghubir Singh (then ASI, Retired SI)
All of them have been convicted for fake encounter. The court will now sentence them on 4 August 2025.
Fake encounter by showing terrorist activity
This case is related to the police station Sirhali and Verowal in Tarn Taran district of Punjab in 1993. CBI investigation revealed that on 27 June 1993, the Punjab Police team abducted Shinder Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Desa Singh and Balkar Singh alias Kala. After this, on 12 July 1993, Shinder Singh, Desa Singh, Balkar Singh and another youth Mangal Singh were killed in a fake encounter in the leadership of DSP Bhupinderjit Singh.
Similarly, on 28 July 1993, Sukhdev Singh, Sarabjit Singh alias Sawa and Harvinder Singh were also killed by the police team in another false encounter. This entire encounter was tried to show that as these people were involved in terrorist activities. While the truth was that he was planned by the police.
Chargesheet filed against 10 policemen
The case started when Paramjit Kaur, one of the victims, filed a petition in the Supreme Court. The court ordered an inquiry to the CBI in 1996. After this, the CBI registered a case in 1999 and a charge sheet was filed in 2002.
The CBI had filed a charge sheet against a total of 10 policemen, but 5 died during the trial. The remaining 5 officers have now been convicted by the court. The CBI court will now sentence these five officers on 4 August.
