Shivakumar K., former Chief Finance Officer of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited in Bengaluru. shared a very emotional post on LinkedIn on Tuesday, in which he narrated his painful experience of battling the corrupt system of Bengaluru after the death of his only daughter. His daughter Akshaya Shivkumar (34) died on 18 September 2025 due to brain haemorrhage, but amidst this deep sorrow, the family had to face bribery and inhumanity of the system at every step.
Shivkumar wrote, after the death of his daughter, he had to pay money everywhere. The ambulance driver asked for Rs 3000 to take him from one hospital to another. The behavior of the police was extremely rude, especially that of the Inspector, who initially refused even to allow post-mortem. Then, after the intervention of my former employer, the post-mortem was conducted and the body was handed over for cremation.
‘Money was also asked for in the crematorium and we gave it’
He wrote, but bribery did not end here. Money was also asked in the crematorium and we gave it. Later, when I went to collect the FIR and post-mortem report, the police openly demanded cash. There were not even CCTV cameras there. The Sub Inspector politely signed the documents and then sent them to his assistant, where a bribe was demanded.
Bribery even in making death certificate
Shivkumar further said that he had to make rounds every day for five days to get the death certificate from the BBMP office, but no officer was present in the name of caste survey. Eventually the certificate was obtained with the help of a senior officer, but at a cost more than the official fee. He asked, “When a person like me has to face all this, what will be the condition of the poor?”
‘Don’t policemen have their own families?’
64-year-old Shivkumar wrote, don’t policemen have their own families? Don’t they have the slightest sense of asking for money from a person who is already in shock?” He further raised the question whether Narayan Murthy, Azim Premji and people with wealth worth billions can save this city from anarchy. His post has sparked a deep debate on the problem of corruption spread to the root of the system in the city.
It is worth noting that after Shivakumar’s post, Bengaluru Police took immediate action and suspended a PSI and a constable of Bellandur police station.
