Taslima Nasreen made this comment on the social media platform X on the Ashtami Tithi of Navratri i.e. Durgashtami, Tuesday (September 30, 2025) in a post. In his post, he shared pictures of Durga Puja Pandal and other cultural events and wrote that whatever religion, all belong to Bengali India.

He said, ‘Nothing is like hiding in it. Hindu culture is the foundation of Bengali culture. We are connected to India as a national identity, whether we have adopted any religion or philosophy in Bengali, whether we have adopted any religion or philosophy. Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Muslims and even atheists, the ancestors of almost all were Hindus of India.

Nasreen, who often criticized Islamic traditions, claimed that the culture of Bengali Muslims is not of Arabs, but is deeply in Hindu traditions. Dhol-Nagade, music and dance are all fundamental manifestations of Bengali culture. This is what means to be Bengali. Refining this means denying its existence.

Reacting to Taslima Nasreen’s post, Javed Akhtar partially agreed to his words. However, he stressed that Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb, which is made from this union of Hindu and Muslim cultures, should also be appreciated.

He said, ‘We respect the traditional people of Awadhi culture a lot of Bengali culture, language and literature. But if someone is not able to appreciate the great Ganga-Jamuni-Awadhi culture and its fanatism and its adulteration, then it is completely its own loss. This culture has nothing to do with Arabia.

He further said, ‘Persian and Central Asian cultures and languages ​​have also been mixed in our culture and language in the same way as Western culture, but it has happened on our own terms. By the way, many Bengali surnames are also of Persian origin.
